SITE VISIT

In order for us to better understand our project location and see what operational, capacity, or geometric issues are present, our team visited the site during AM & PM peak hours. The purpose of this site visit was not only to identify any traffic related issues but also any constraints that would affect the geometric design process. While on site, our team noticed that the Intersection did not seem to have any major congestion related issues other than the high truck volumes.

While on site, we looked for any signs that indicated the presence of any operational deficiencies in the area. We found debris from a previous accident and a broken guardrail.

This let us to look into TASAS data, provided to us by Caltrans D8, which indicated that the accidents at this location were significantly higher than other similar facility types in CA.

One of the primary collision factors along State Route 138 was due to failure to yield which accounted for 30% of accidents along this segment, as well as 30% due to speeding. Furthermore, along State Route 2, 60% of accidents occurring at this location were due to improper turns which we identified to be the left turn from westbound 138 onto westbound State Route 2.

Having identified these primary collision factors, we were then able to provide recommendations to our design team to help us mitigate for these safety concerns.
